God @ Work @ Work

John has lots of books about this topic, which we can borrow.

How do we spend our lives, how do we live our lives? We might spend 8-12 hours a day working or travelling to/from work. 6-8 hours sleeping.  John has worked out that on average we spend 100 days a year working.

John 9 v 5 - Jesus the light of the world.

Matt 5 v 14 - You are the light of th world.

2 Cor 4 v 6-10 - God's light in our hearts in jars of clay.

Some people are like raw eggs, when they are under pressure they are crushed. There was a graphic illustration of this! Some are like stones, they don't change under pressure. We are like hard boiled eggs, when the shell is crushed the white inside shown through = Jesus.

In economic terms, people re described as rational, self interested and individualistic.  We expect to be paid for our work - John handed out Mars bars but some people didn't get any!

Matthew 20 - the workers in the vinyard.

We get paid the market rate not necessarily what we deserve. Could be more, could be less, Rather abitrary. Teaches us to be content with what we've got and to be generous.

Genesis 2 - God rested after working. God's work was maintaining creation, Adam & Eve’s job was to help.

John 17 v 9, 11, 21, 23 - God's prayer is for unity. Not that we would be happy or good evangelists, but that we would be as one.

Interruption to John’s talk: How do we react to interruptions? Does Jesus show through our cracks?

Back to unity - how are we with other Christians at work, who may be from different churches and denominations. Power in unity. There is more we have in common than divides us.

Walk in the light and in fellowship. Discern who are other people of faith.

We are all constantly 'living by faith', not just those who we traditionally think of under this heading.

Looking Forward ...

  1. Read ‘Serving Christ in the workplace’ by Larry Peabody  - available from Amazon.co.uk
  2. Work-related seminars by Care for the Family
  3. Think and pray about:
    • Immediate workplace needs.
    • Longer term needs and issues.
    • Identification of other workplace believers.
    • Discernment of Christ's body in and around work.
    • Practise discussing this topic to colleagues, what will you say if they ask what you did at the weekend?
    • Repent of wrong attitudes and relationships in the workplace.
