Questions & Answers: Who is Jesus?
5th Nov Q&A with Trevor Withers
Question: Who is Jesus to us?
Trevor found himself talking to someone this week who wanted to know what it means to be a Christian, and he found himself describing what it means to live like Jesus.
And it got him thinking about who is Jesus, what does he mean to us.
Answers from the floor:-
Someone who has a plan for me even though I don't know what that plan is.
He sees my hearts and loves me the same.
Someone who wants to spend time with me, sometimes he just looks at me. I was looking for answers but he just came and sat with me.
The way forward, the truth without which nothing makes sense, the life in all its fullness which sometimes we struggle with.
We are called to be like him but we are not him, which is releasing, he is so different, he can cope with all our questions, doesn't get cross if we ask the wrong question, somehow he's still present for me.
We can't put all our worries and hassles aside to come to Jesus, we have to bring them with us when we meet with him, and he meets with us.
Spending time with Jesus gives us perspective, it's time well spent.
Jesus represents God to us, God is not unapproachable.
When we hit rock bottom, he's always there.
Chris said that he likes to gather evidence as to who Jesus is, and from it sees that Jesus is indescribable, awesome, wonderful.
Jesus is a political activist, we see the oppression and violence and corruption all around us, and Jesus has defeated all that. It means we have to be involved. There was a deliberate aggression in how he tackled the powers around him, which is very attractive to us.
The lion of Judah, strength and vulnerability, healed the broken hearted and yet kicked the tables over.
Men perhaps struggle as to how to be in a relationship with a man who is not stereotypical, not a typical male as our role models have been.
Also Jesus is in many ways unpredictable, cursing the fig tree, driving people out of the temple with a whip, creating wine so people could get even more drunk that they were already.
We don't come closer to God because of intellectual stuff, but we come closer to God in believing in Jesus. Do we believe only in Jesus, not in the intellectual things we have attached to our faith.
Also not just believe in Jesus but believe what he believes too.
Our view of Jesus changes year by year as we walk with him and he walks with us.
No other religion says 'I defeated death', in a supermarket amongst the special offers Jesus is the only genuine special offer. |
